Wheelchair hire
We can help when you have a temporary need for a wheelchair
Maybe you have broken your leg, perhaps an elderly relative is coming to stay, or you could be waiting for a wheelchair to be provided by the NHS.
The Disability Resource Centre hires out manual wheelchairs. We have both self-propelling chairs (with large rear wheels) and attendant-controlled chairs (four small wheels, helper to push). We also offer bariatric wheelchairs for people weighing over 18 stone. We have sets of leg extensions if required, subject to availability.
Please call us on 01582 470900 or email us to find out more.
Please read our terms and conditions for equipment hire.

We have both self-propelling wheelchairs (with large rear wheels) and attendant-controlled wheelchairs (four small wheels, helper to push). We also have a bariatric wheelchair for people weighing over 18 stone.
We have sets of leg extensions if required, subject to availability.
We charge £15 per week or £18 per week if you pay VAT.
We usually supply wheelchairs for up to 4 weeks, but this can be extended if necessary up to 12 weeks (terms and conditions do apply).
Please note that we ask for a deposit of £50 which is returned to you when the chair is returned to us.

3. Cost-effective: For short-term needs, hiring can be more economical than purchasing a wheelchair outright.

Understanding different wheelchair types
Self-propelling wheelchairs:
These chairs have large rear wheels that allow the user to move independently. They’re ideal for individuals with upper body strength and those who prefer autonomy in their mobility.
Attendant-controlled wheelchairs:
With four small wheels, these chairs are designed to be pushed by a carer or family member. They’re suitable for those who may not have the strength or ability to self-propel.
Bariatric wheelchairs:
Specially designed for individuals weighing over 18 stone (114 kg), these chairs offer extra width and weight capacity to ensure comfort and safety.
Tips for using a hired wheelchair
1. Familiarise yourself with the chair: Before use, take some time to understand how the wheelchair operates, including brakes and any adjustable features.
2. Plan your routes: Consider accessibility when planning outings, including ramps, wide doorways, and lift access.
3. Maintain the wheelchair: While in your care, keep the wheelchair clean and please report any issues to us promptly.
4. Use safety features: Always engage brakes when stationary and use seat belts if provided.
5. Consider accessories: Ask about additional items like cushions or leg rests that might enhance comfort during use.
