Read our CEO’s report of the day:
“Yesterday was a very special day at The Disability Resource Centre as we named our fitness and wellbeing hub in honour of our late Trustee, Terry Garthwaite.
We were also very proud to receive a donation of nearly £5,000 towards funds to improve the facilities here at The Disability Resource Centre, from Lorna Garthwaite, Terry’s Daughter-in–law.
Lorna ran the London Marathon on our behalf in April. Lorna was accompanied by Tonina, Terry’s wife and his sister Sue, who had not visited the centre before. It enabled them to see first-hand the work that Terry was so passionate about in his role as the Treasurer of our charity.
A plaque inscribed with Terry’s name was “unveiled” by Lorna which will be a lasting memory for us all. We are really grateful to Lorna for raising such a massive amount of money and continuing to support us as she takes on more challenges.
Jill Pick, our Chair of Trustees and a founder member of The Disability Resource Centre, was presented with the cheque by Lorna and gave a lovely speech; members of staff who didn’t know Terry were also able to appreciate him thanks to Jill’s fine speech.
Jill also thanked the team here at our charity who showed their support for Lorna in the marathon by holding their own “relay marathon”. This involved many members of the team exercising in variations of 26: 26 times on the fitness equipment, 26 laps of the building (and our building is massive), 26 HIIT moves and so on, for which they were sponsored by family and friends.
One employee did particularly well and managed to raise £100 and presented me with a cheque.
Lorna, Tonina and Sue were very happy to share tea and cake with some our service users and hear about how using the different services on offer had made such a difference to their lives.
A truly magical day here at The Disability Resource Centre.”

We are always excited to hear from supporters of our charity who would like to help us raise vital funds to ensure that we can keep helping the thousands of disabled we support across Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Luton.
Please email us with your fundraising ideas. Thanks very much.
